Lighting the Flame of Christ

Prelude: “Brethren, We Have Met to Worship” arr. John Purifoy

Call to Worship

Happy are those who do not ridicule and scoff

But who delight in God’s teachings and meditate on them.

They are like trees planted by streams of water.

They yield fruit in due season, and their leaves do not wither.

Let us pray together:

Prayer of the Day

Holy One, open us to the possibility that we are being chosen to be new disciples with new ministries in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Hymn of Praise #612 “We Praise You, O God”

Invitation to Healing

The Lord watches over our ways. Let us put our trust in God’s grace and offer our prayer confessing our need for healing and wholeness:

Prayer of Wholeness

God, though you call us to delight in your teachings, we can become cynical and full of doubt.  Do not judge us, we pray, but heal us and restore us to you.  Guard us and protect us from internal doubt and external tribulation and sanctify us in truth; in Jesus’ name.  Amen.

                                                    Please continue in silent prayer

Kyrie: Hymn #437 “You Are the Lord, Giver of Mercy

Assurance of Pardon and Passing of the Peace

Friends, believe this Good News: God is One and God is Three – Love constantly flowing in, out, and through; the gift of Jesus Christ for me and for you. For this we say:

Thanks be to God!

Since God has loved us through Christ, let us love one another. Please share a sign of peace with those with whom you are worshiping.

Invitation to Present Our Offerings with Thanksgiving

Members, friends, and guests: Thank you for your commitment and your generosity during this past year! Your continued tithing practice and stewardship of the community of your Church is precious. You can send checks made out to your church and send them in the mail, or in the case of Mt. Tabor, use the donate button at the bottom of the weekly online newsletter.

Moment for Mission:

Both churches here today have participated in the “four for four” mission giving partnership giving opportunities of One Great Hour of Sharing, the Pentecost Offering, the Peace and Global Witness, and the Christmas Joy offerings.  Next week is Pentecost! If you feel moved to give toward this offering, please drop a check in the mail to your church with Pentecost Offering on the Memo line.

A gift to the Pentecost Offering helps the church encourage, develop, and support its young people, and also address the needs of at-risk children. 40% of the Pentecost offering can be retained by individual congregations wanting to make an impact in the lives of young people within their own community. The remaining 60% is used to support children-at-risk, youth, and young adults through ministries of the Presbyterian Mission Agency.

Offering of Thanksgiving with Poetry: “George Herbert” ~ Malcolm Guite

Gentle exemplar, help us in our trials

With all that passed between you and your Lord,

That intimate exchange of frowns and smiles.

Which chronicled your love-match with the Word.

Your manuscript, entrusted to a friend,

Has been entrusted now to every soul,

We make a new beginning in your end

And find. Your broken heart has made us whole.

Time has transplanted you, and you take root,

Past changing in the paradise of Love.

Help me to trace your Temple, tune your lute,

And listen for an echo from above.

Open the window, let me hear you sing,

And see the Word with you in everything.

Prayer of Dedication:

Lord God, we offer to you only a portion of what you have given us. All that we have is from your creative hand. All that we can give away we do through the love of Jesus. All our renewal comes from the Holy Spirit’s wisdom. So we pray any gifts we offer are done so others may have joy in you; in the name of Jesus we pray, Amen.

Closing Hymn #733 “We All Are One in Mission”

The word of God assures us: What we will be has not yet been revealed. Living in the love of Christ, be open to God calling you into new ministries. Live, therefore, with hope, share your joy, withhold your anger, shed your disappointments, and turn to all people with gentleness, for they too are loved by God even as you are.

The Lord bless you and keep you, the Lord make his face to shine upon you, and give you peace.

Friends, our worship has ended, let our service begin.

Congregational Song “Go Now in Peace”

Mt. Tabor: Go now in peace        Trout Lake: Go now in peace

All together: May the Love of God surround you!

Mt. Tabor: Everywhere               Trout Lake: Everywhere

All together: You may go!

Coffee Hour Fellowship Questions:

In the first chapter of Acts, when the eleven seek to replace Judas with a new apostle, they ask God to reveal who that should be by casting lots. How do you think God’s will is revealed to us today? Is it revealed in more than one way?

Household Prayer: Morning

Holy One thank you for the ability to begin my day in prayer. Guide my path today. No matter what happens, help me to feel that I belong to you, and bring home to you at the end of the day. Amen.

Household Prayer: Evening

Loving God, thank you for the claiming me as your own. I have been in the world all day, but I also know that I am in you. Give me the grace to let go of this day and entrust it to your care. Be with me as I sleep this night and continue to sanctify me in your embrace. Amen.
