Prelude: Deep River/Shall We Gather at the Riverarr. Lloyd Larson

Call to Worship

God alone laid the foundations of the earth.

The morning stars sang together and all the heavenly beings shouted for joy.

From the midst of the whirlwind, God speaks with power.

We have seen the deeds of the Lord, who commands and raises the stormy wind and also makes the storm be still. We ourselves have seen the wondrous deeds of the Lord!

Let us pray together:

Prayer of the Day

Holy God, you created the world and all that is in it. The wind and the sea obey your Son. You are the source of our strength and our confidence is in you. All praise be to you, our stronghold and savior. Amen!

Hymn of Praise #624 “I Greet Thee, Who My Sure Redeemer Art”

Invitation to Healing

God has said: “At an acceptable time I have listened to you, and on a day of salvation I have helped you.” Let us offer our brokenness to God, who will listen, help, and heal us.

Prayer of Healing

Saving God, we confess that our faith is too small, our fear is too great. When we are overwhelmed, we think you do not care enough for us. When life is uncertain and risky, we are not sure we can trust you with our whole hearts. Even when you move among us in powerful ways, we question who you are, and even sometimes if you are. Forgive us and calm our fears, we pray. Teach us to trust in your power to save and guide us in every circumstance. Grant us your peace, which is clearly beyond our understanding. In Christ’s name we pray.

Kyrie: #752 “Dona nobis pacem Sing twice through in a round

Assurance and Passing of the Peace

Friends, believe this Good News: God is One and God is Three – Love constantly flowing in, out, and through; the gift of Jesus Christ for me and for you. For this we say: Thanks be to God!

Since God has loved us through Christ, let us love one another. Please share a sign of peace with those with whom you are worshiping.

Hymn of Response: #583 “Gloria, gloria3x in a round

Celebrating Joys: Where we have seen God at work

Hymn of Response: #628 “Praise, I will Praise you, Lord”

Prayer of Illumination:

Great Good and Gifting God, by your mysterious power speak to us your truth and show us your wisdom, that we may know you more deeply and serve you more faithfully, for the sake of Jesus Christ. Amen.

Affirmation of Faith: ~ Adapted from A Brief Statement of Faith, section 4

We trust in God the Holy Spirit, everywhere the giver and renewer of life. In a broken and fearful world the Spirit gives us courage to pray without ceasing, to witness among all peoples to Christ as Lord and Savior, to unmask idolatries in Church and culture, to hear the voice of peoples long silenced, and to work with others for justice, freedom, and peace.

Intercessory Prayers of the People (“Lord in your mercy,” “Hear our prayers”)

The Lord’s Prayer: “…debts…debtors…”

Prayer of Thanksgiving/Dedication

How grateful we are, O God, that you call us to serve with the Holy Spirit, who fills us with patience and generosity and genuine love. We pray that all we return to you will be used faithfully in ministry to the world. In the name of Christ, Amen.

Closing Hymn #816 “If Thou but Trust in God to Guide Thee”

In every circumstance, trust in God, who has great power to save and keep us.

May the power of God uphold you, the peace of Christ rest upon you, and the Holy Spirit defend you, now and always.

Song: “Let There Be Peace on Earth” Lyrics inside front cover of the hymnal.

Bathrooms and a diaper changing station are located in the Fellowship Hall.  Please join us at the outdoor pavilion for coffee, refreshments and conversation following worship.

Questions for Reflection:

Mark 4:35-41 tells of a time when the disciples were in great fear in a storm. Can you remember a time when you were in a frightening storm (literal or figurative) and felt in danger of being “swamped?” Did God feel far away or near to help you?

Household Prayer: Morning

Whether I wake to birdsong or sirens or the deep silence before dawn, I awake to your presence, O God.  Enable me to trust completely in you as I meet the challenges of this new day. Make me watchful for your grace at work; may all I do be a testament to your glory.  In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

Household Prayer: Evening

As I give myself over to sleep, dear Lord, I thank you for the gift of rest. Let me relinquish the cares of the day. Forgive the ways I have failed you. Restore me to you and renew my faithfulness, that I may awake to serve you more, for Jesus’ sake. Amen.
