Christmas Eve

2022 Christmas Eve Saturday December 24 (white candle in the center)

Reader #1: We gather to celebrate the birth of the one who is the light of the world, the Prince of Peace, Home to the homeless, Refuge for the weary.

[Alternative younger reader]: We have explored what it is to wait expectantly for the best Christmas gift the world has ever seen.

Reader #2: We have acknowledged that the world needs the hope, peace, joy and love of Jesus Christ now more than ever.

All gathered sing: O Come, O Come Emmanuel, vs. 1, 5

O come, O come, Emmanuel and ransom captive Israel
 that mourns in lonely exile here; until the Son of God appear;

Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel shall come to thee, O Israel

O come, O come, Lord God of might, who to thy tribes, on Sinai’s height; in ancient times did give the law in cloud and majesty and awe.

Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel shall come to thee, O Israel

Reader #3: Christ is our hope and our salvation. Christ is the Divine Mystery that lives and breathes and walks among us. Christ brings meaning and hope to a world short on both.

Reader #1: We light these candles again and remember how we have waited on love – love has not let us down.

Reader #2: We light the Christ candle in the center of it all. The Light of the World was born this night. His name is Jesus, Emmanuel, God with us. Our waiting is over!

Reader #3: Let us pray together:

God of Might, Light from Light, Healing Favor, Righteous Bright:

We live in hope that we would be your servants. We live in Peace, hoping to become the peacemakers you made us to be. We live in Joy, knowing that we belong to you and we are yours forever. We live in love, showing the love with which you first loved us. Love us still, and help us to love others. In your Holy name we pray, let all God’s children say, “Amen!”
